Boot from Windows 7 VHD file

If you have an exisiting Windows installation, and want to install a fresh one from a VHD file, you can easily do that using "bcdedit' tool in Windows 7. Lets say you have a Windows 7 VHD file located in your "D:" drive at this location: D:\Windows7.vhd. Now you need to add this VHD in your Windows boot load menu. Follow these steps:

1. Open DOS command prompt (Run As Administrator), then type:

bcdedit /copy {default} /d "My New VHD"

This command will return a GUID once it completes successfully. Note down this GUID including braces ({GUID}).

2. Then type these commands in the same DOS window (replace {guid} with the GUID you got from step #1 above):

bcdedit /set {guid} device vhd=D:\Windows7.vhd

bcdedit /set {guid} osdevice vhd=D:\Windows7.vhd

3. Set this new boot entry for your VHD file as the default by typing this command:

bcdedit /default {guid}

4. For x86 system compatibility, type this final command:

bcdedit /set {guid} detecthal on
