Difference between Website and webapplication?

There are two types of projects in Visual studio

1. Website 

2. Web Application

I would like to know what is the difference between website and webapplication projects. When to use website and when to use webapplication?

Interestingly, but I have contributed to similar question in the forums.asp.net. Well, not exactly about the difference, but, more about issue when user was trying to create Web Application, but he has created Web Sites, so that some of the things he needed to accomplish were not available.

So, what is the difference?
